A dinosaur themed bedroom is not just for boys, little girls also have a fascination with these creatures and younger children especially all seem to go through a dinosaur phase. Making a themed room can be as simple as putting some stickers on the wall and maybe some dinosaur bedding or can involve a complete room transformation with a custom made bed and hand painted full wall dinosaur mural. Most parents will settle for something in between, we haven’t all got the time and money for a full style TV type room makeover and some dinosaur bedding, a lampshade and some stickers will still look fantastic to a four year old.
If you are the artistic type of parent and have the time and money then the sky is the limit for a room transformation. A custom dinosaur bed made from plywood or MDF is not that difficult, however after the time and cost of materials it won’t be much cheaper than a ready-made dinosaur bed. You could also make your own dinosaur bedding using fabric paint and some simple stencils to create a unique duvet cover and sheets and pillows.
Mirrors and chalk boards are another great and simple room addition, take a regular mirror you don’t use or find a cheap one at a car boot sale and glue it to a plywood cut-out of your child’s favourite dino and paint to match the room.
The same can be done with a chalk board, simply scale your stencil up and paint an area in the centre with some black matt paint (the chalk area) this can then be attached to a stand or fixed to the wall. |

If you are feeling really adventurous you can buy sheets of ply and using a jigsaw cut out trees and ferns to create a jungle type atmosphere that will have a 3D effect and add to the realism, get some dinosaur bedding and a lamp or two and job done!
If money is no object you could always hire a mural artist, (check the internet for artists in your area) and have the entire room painted in a Jurassic scene of your choice, just remember to consult the young person who will be sleeping there, it may look great to you but a two meter high snarling Trex might give smaller children nightmares, younger children who are into dinosaurs are more interested in the ‘cartoon’ type of dinosaur with big eyes and smiling faces, older boys are much more into snarling fierce looking dinosaurs and obviously the Trex and Velociraptor are the top choices.
There are lots of ready made accessories that don’t cost the earth yet help to give a room a unique feel, one of my favourites is dino light switch covers which now come with a lot of choice, bookends are another cheap addition but my favourite and I think the best value by far is a ready made mural, at 10x8 feet it will cover an entire wall in the average sized child’s bedroom and can be put up very quickly and also taken down when your child moves on to Spiderman, Barbie or whatever the craze is at the time and you wont have to redecorate the entire room.
Remember unlike Spiderman, Transformers, Bakugan etc.etc, dinosaurs were real and are part of our planets history, I would have no problem what so ever with a child learning about fossils and the planets early history, it’s education after all. |
