If your living with a child who is rather fond of dinosaurs you may want to brush up on some dinosaur facts just to save face if nothing else. The most famous dinosaur was the Tyranosaurus Rex or T.rex for short, it's teeth were about 16cm long and it's biting power was thought to be 10 times that of a great white shark. Not all dinosaurs were huge beasts, there were some dinosaurs like Compsognathus that were no bigger than a chicken. The longest dinosaurs were around 40 metrers (125 feet) long, and ate a ton of food per day. Dinosaurs lived and evolved for over 185 million years until they became extinct. no one knows why, and the cause has not been proven yet, but many scientists believe that an asteroid hit the earth , probably In the Gulf of Mexico. This is believed to have happened 65 million years ago. The heaviest dinosaur was probably Brachiosaurus at around 80 tonnes. It was the equivalent to 17 Elephants. Brachiosaurus was 16m tall and 26m long and is the largest dinosaur skeleton displayed in a museum. |

The tallest dinosaurs were the Brachiosaurid group of sauropods. Their front legs were longer than the rear legs giving them a giraffe-like appearence. This combined with their extremely long necks, which were held vertically, meant they could eat from the tallest trees. Brachiosaurus - the most well known of the group - was 13 metres tall. Sauroposeidon was huge and grew to 18.5 metres tall. The fastest dinosaurs were the ostrich type ornithomimids, such as Dromiceiomimus, which could run at speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour. For now over 700 different species of dinosaurs have been found and named. However scientists believe that there are many more new and different dinosaur species still to be discovered and we still find new species. |
